SAN – San Diego Airport Parking
San Diego International Airport (SAN) serves 18.3 million passengers annually. It is the largest single-runway airport in the country and is one of the only airports in the country that is not a hub for any major airline. However, Southwest, Delta and American Airlines offer numerous daily flights.
During World War II, the US Army Air Corps used the airport as a base. As a result, the airport was expanded to allow for heavy bombers by increasing the length of its runways. This made the airport ready to handle passenger planes even before they were widely used. In 1967, Terminal 1 was opened followed by Terminal 2 in 1979. And recently (1996) Terminal 3 was opened to make the decade’s-long expansion complete. SAN is currently undergoing another renovation of Terminal 2, which will add gates and make traffic flow into the terminal run smoothly. The project is expected to be completed in 2013.
The airport is located off the I-5 and Harbor Drive and can be reached by car or taxi. Since it is located in a densely populated area, flights only depart between the hours of 6:30am and 11:30pm.
