LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is the smallest of the three airports that make up New York’s airport system (JFK and Newark are the others), which serves around 106 million passengers a year. LaGuardia alone serves approximately 23 million passengers per year. Although LGA was ranked last of the three in passengers satisfaction by J.D. Power and Associates, it remains popular because it is centrally located and very close to the tourist sites in Manhattan. LaGuardia is a hub for Delta, and a focus airport for AirTran Airways, American Airlines and American Eagle. Most flights run to locations in the United States, Aruba and the Bahamas.
When the airport opened in 1939, competition for airline traffic was fairly intense in the NY area, but LaGuardia had 5 airlines committed to flying from its runways before it even opened its doors. Since then, although it has undergone several expansions and additions, the airport has not been able create a seamless system to keep up with increased flight demand. In the spring of 2010, the NY Port Authority announced a plan to explore a full demolition and rebuilding of the airport.
LaGuardia is located in Queens off of I-278 and Grand Central Parkway ad is best reached by city bus, subway or taxi.
