JAX – Jacksonville International Airport

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) opened on October 31, 1968.  It currently serves around seven million passengers per year.  Unlike most primary airports, traffic to Jacksonville grew at a slow rate.  Expansion was not necessary until recently.

When it was first constructed, JAX had a unique layout that separated departing and arriving passengers onto different sides of the terminal.  Because of the recent increase in traffic, this scheme is no longer in use.

JAX is one of Florida’s military-civilian airports.  It houses the 125th Fighter-Interceptor Group (125 FIG) of the Florida Air National Guard (FANG) on the Jacksonville Air National Guard Base on the airport grounds.

JAX is currently undergoing one of a series of renovations that will make it easier for passengers to reach their gates.  New concourses will be added in the future and there are also plans to add a moving walkway.

Jacksonville is a spread out city.  The NS-33 “AirJTA” express bus takes passengers to and from downtown Jacksonville.
