Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport is one of the three major airports in the Miami – Gold Coast region of Southern Florida. It is known by its FAA code FLL. It has been ranked as one of the 50 best airports in the world, and is a busy international gateway with many flights to and from the Caribbean and Europe.
FLL serves about 24 million domestic passengers a year, and about 2 million international passengers. Fort Lauderdale is a focus city for Allegiant Air, AirTran Airways, JetBlue Airways, and Caribbean Airlines. It is a hub for Spirit Airlines. This is a very popular airport for passengers on their way to the Caribbean.
Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International started as a military base for Navy in 1929.
In 1953, commercial flights began to run after the military base was closed. The first flight was to Nassau in the Bahamas. The airline is quite large with five terminals.
FLL can be reached by taking bus #1 of the Broward County Transit service. The region’s Tri-Rail service can be used provided passengers are willing to take a shuttle bus from the airport to the nearest station.
