Buffalo Niagara International Airport often shortened to BUF, is the busiest airport in Upstate New York. It was built during the 1930s and officially opened in 1939, making it one of the oldest airports in the country. BUF has gone through at least 6 expansions and renovations since it was opened to try to keep up with demand. Still, demand has grown faster than expansion. Major airlines like American focused lot of energy in Buffalo until deregulation. At that point Buffalo became a focus city for smaller, regional airlines like Frontier. Buffalo-Niagara serves about 4 million passengers per year. This used to be one of the most expensive airports to fly into, but now airlines like Frontier, Jet Blue and Southwest offer reasonably-priced service. Buffalo is a popular airport for Canadians traveling to East Coast destinations in the US. The airport is centrally-located off of the Kensington Expressway and the busy I-90.
